Welcome to 2018 and life back in Northern New England

2018 will be a new start for Katy and me.  We had a lot of fun during our short tenure living high up in the Colorado Rockies but are extremely happy to be back home.

We were lucky enough to purchase a small (832 sq feet) super efficient house which is located on the edge of the White River in West Hartford, Vermont.  We are also fortunate to have the Appalachian Trail run right by the house for easy access to beautiful trails (AT plus local trails).

I am starting my second year at Oura Health while Katy has joined The Feline Hospital of Salem.  Katy will be working three days per week in Salem, MA.

I hope to get back into more normal blogging patterns in 2018. So stay tuned.

Enjoy!

Lower Ketone Blood Testing Is On The Way

More and more people are pursuing a ketogenic lifestyle with each passing year.  Most people use the Abbott Precision Xtra Glucose and Ketone Meter.  This meter works great, but the ketone test strips run around $2.50 per strip.

Jimmy Moore of Livin La Vida Low Carb fame is helping to bring a new ketone testing device to the market which supports $1 each ketone test strips. This new device, The Ketonian, is currently available for pre-order.

I encourage you to check out The Ketonian if you are serious about trying to become keto adapted. You can learn more about ketosis by visiting Dominic D'Agostino's site, KetoNutrition.

Until next time,

New ŌURA Ring Features

In the event that you have not had time to read Ben Greenfield's most recent blog post on the ŌURA Ring, I have outlined the new features ŌURA has released over the past couple of months.

First, we have always measured HRV while you sleep but had not previously shown it. We now show your average HRV derived all of the 5-minute samples taken while you sleep.  This would mean 96 distinct samples assuming you slept for eight hours. Pretty neat and way more accurate than measurements taken after you have woken up in the morning.

Second, we now show temperature deviation graphs.  The ring determines your baseline and then reports deviations from this baseline. Dramatic changes in temperature can predict the onset of illness, as well as help women, track their ovulation cycle.

Finally, we released a web dashboard.  The dashboard shows a lot of the data you already see on the IOS and Android apps but adds a graph of all the HRV samples measured while you slept. This HRV graph can help you understand if your sleep helped you recover from the previous day's activities. For instance, an upward trending HRV is a good indicator that your sleep contributed to a solid recovery. The dashboard also allows you to view long range trends for almost all of the metrics we track. You can use these long term trends to build your own correlations to lifestyle changes, etc.

Until next time,

Chuck

Radio Silence

It has been way too long since my last blog post.  I needed a break from blogging. In addition, my work and travel schedule was nuts.  I hope to post at least one blog per week going forward.  These posts will be focused on health, wellness, and fitness topics.

So until then,

What causes you to wake up in the middle of the night?

The below Time post details some of the common reasons which cause certain people to wake up in the middle of the night.  It is a good read.

You Asked: Why Do I Always Wake Up at 3 A.M.?
